Since I’ve updated my website to start providing photography services in Portsmouth. Thought it would be helpful to provide a little reading for couples, especially the brides on how to choose a photographer for your wedding.
The Dress
I’ve assisted countless weddings and worked on a few weddings myself. Your wedding photographs will capture the memories of your special day. I know wedding is a magical day for everybody, and I do know how stressful the wedding day can be for the couple, the family, and the photographer. Hence, choosing the right photographer is very important, so you will have one less element to be stressed about.
There are several elements to consider when looking for your wedding photographer:
So here are my little help on how to choose the right photographer for you.
Photographic Style
Each photographer have their own individual style. There are journalistic style, formal and classic posed shots, candid, black & white, sepia, retouched, glamour and so on. Film & Digital photographers makes a difference in the look of the photographs. Jose Villa is a photographer that uses film, and his work stands out for his unique look. Here you can see his work on his blog. Most photographers will have a little bit of everything in the style. So the quality of work is the important part.
Experience & Price
Most couples/family will try to save as much as they can on their wedding, by hiring cheaper photographers, but is it really worth it? Expensive venue, expensive food, expensive dress, and budget photographer?
The wedding photography industry is huge!
There are a lot of amateur photographers that want to provide services in order to get “experience”, money and a name for themselves. So they would charge clients at a very low price, some even charge high. They just don’t realize what they are doing is giving the industry a really bad reputation.
Most photographers will have a website, but make sure to check out thier portfolio. Look around different photographer’s work, you can get a general idea of the quality of work, and if its up to your standard. Sometimes, its not the money, its the quality and how much you like it. Generally, experienced/good photographer will charge a premium, but its worth it. You really don’t want to go thru this process, where the couple sued a photographer for poor work. Read it Here!
Connection & Personality
There are many photographers out there. Some are shy, some are fun, some are arrogant, and even some are weird, the list goes on. I’ve seen many different types of photographers over the years. It all depends on your “chemistry” with your photographer, if you feel comfortable with your photographer, some how the photographs will just turn out well.
The Comfy Walk
Its the natural feelings that brings out the natural smile and happiness, it shows in the photographs. If you like the style then go ahead with it. Some photographers appearance might affect your decision. I’ve seen some that are really professional that dress accordingly, and some just wear jeans and a t-shirt. So, find out if their appearance goes well with you.
You should also make sure that the photographer you choose quickly establishes a good rapport with you and makes you feel comfortable. He should be able to advise you on where and how to stand without making you feel shy or self conscious!

Discuss and find out all these other information.
- Payment – Deposit and final payment should be made
- Working Hours – if its flexible, fixed, or by the hour
- Delivery Time – How long will you get to see the photographs
- What is included – if album/retouching/web album is available
